This workshop is part of the Abode Press Virtual Retreat Programming. Abode is an intersectional, anti-racist nonprofit publishing press based in the heart of Texas and run by queer/ trans folks primarily in the South.

WHEN: 6-7pm Central Time

WHERE: Virtual

PRICE: $25 minimum

Workshop Description: The literary world relies heavily on ableist language to communicate. This workshop is designed to guide writers in expanding their capacity to communicate beyond reliance on overused phrases based in ableism. The workshop will aid writers in identifying ableist language. It will also briefly discuss how ableist language hurts the most marginalized (with a focus on how ableism blows back on Black people, Indigenous people, People of Color, queer folks, trans folks, and women). Finally, we will complete writing exercises to practice what we learned and have an opportunity to share with others. In this way, participants can engage with multiple examples of writing that utilizes creativity to write beyond ableism and toward specificity. Writers will leave with a list of resources on how to begin an exploration of concepts related to disability justice.

ACCESS INFORMATION: This event is virtual on Zoom. Auto-captions will be provided.
